Former Minister of Education and Higher Education and Former General Secretary of the United National Party (UNP), Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, has been arrested by officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).
He was arrested following the conclusion of a statement recorded by the Commission, after he appeared before it today (05) as summoned.
The arrest was made in connection with an ongoing investigation into allegations of corruption, specifically regarding the recruitment of employees to the Presidential Secretariat and utilizing them for his personal, political, and UNP party activities.
The arrested former minister is scheduled to be produced before the court.
