The government yesterday (03) briefed the Mahanayake Theros of the Malwatte and Asgiriya chapters regarding the proposed draft bill to extend the retirement age of judges.
Minister of Health and Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, and Minister of Justice and National Integration, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara, visited the Chief Prelates to explain the rationale behind the amendment.
During the discussion, the Mahanayake of the Malwatte Chapter, Most Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thero, noted that enacting constitutional amendments targeting a single individual is inappropriate. However, the Prelate remarked that there is no issue if the amendment applies uniformly across the entire judicial system to extend the retirement age of all judges.
