The opposition suffered a severe defeat during the parliamentary vote following the debate on the No-Confidence Motion brought against Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara over the tragic incident at the Negombo Prison.
The remnant opposition failed to secure even the votes of all 37 MPs who had signed the motion. When the vote was called, only 36 opposition MPs voted in favor of the proposal.
By comparison, the previous No-Confidence Motion brought by the opposition against former Minister of Power and Energy Kumara Jayakody received 49 votes in favor. In the latest motion, the number of votes supporting the opposition dropped further to just 36.
A notable highlight of the vote was that even some MPs who actively signed the No-Confidence Motion abstained from voting in favor of it.
