Namal’s Faction Overtakes Sajith in Opposition Coalition Talks

Following a request made by Namal Rajapaksa to Sajith Premadasa last week, several opposition factions were brought together around a single table. Analysts point out that Namal Rajapaksa’s group clearly dominated the discussions, sidelining Sajith Premadasa’s representation.

Strengthening Namal Rajapaksa’s camp, key political figures including Dinesh Gunawardena, Prof. G.L. Peiris, Asanka Navarathna, and Nimal Siripala de Silva actively participated in the meeting. In contrast, Sajith Premadasa was represented only by Ranjith Madduma Bandara and Sujeewa Senasinghe.

Although the delegates convened under the pretext of safeguarding democracy, the rule of law, and the independence of the judiciary, political commentators highlight that Namal Rajapaksa effectively seized majority control within the coalition. Notably, this comes at a time when the highest number of ongoing court cases in the country are filed against members of the Rajapaksa family.
