The Minister of Health and Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, has held discussions with representatives of the trade unions in the health sector for the first time since assuming the position of Minister.
Attention was drawn to the problems faced by health professionals and the short-term and long-term measures to be taken to maintain regular health services.
Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA), All Ceylon Medical Officers Association (ACMOA), Association of Medical Specialists (AMS), Government Dentists Association (GDSA), All Ceylon Nurses Association, Public Service United Nurses Association and Government Nurses Association (GNOA) participated in the discussion.
The trade union representatives presented their professional problems to the Minister of Health. The Minister of Health responded by emphasizing that it is essential to solve the existing issues in cooperation with the Ministry of Health so that we can work systematically to improve the health service.
The Minister asked for everyone’s support in solving the existing problems without creating new ones. He also emphasized the importance of making decisions in collective discussions with all the professionals in the field.
The Minister also stated that the Ministry of Health will continue to protect the professional dignity of health professionals and provide them with their professional rights. Since the free health service in this country has even received international recognition, respect should be given to all health professionals who contribute to it.
