Ranil’s ‘monkey’ gang causes internal split in UNP

It is reported that a group of senior members of the UNP have declared war, saying that the party has faced massive opposition in the country because both the President and the General Secretary acted like the monkeys that had been deployed to protect the king.
It has been revealed that Ravi Karunanayake, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Naveen Dissanayake, Harin Fernando, and Manusha Nanayakkara, who had joined from the SJB, are among the seniors who declared war. It is also reported that the group, including Nimal Lanza and Anura Prirayadharshana Yapa, who entered the political arena on behalf of Ranil Wickravamasinghe, are also among the protestors.
Meanwhile, Ravi Karunanayake said in a press conference, “Don’t provide jokes to the country. These are opinions expressed by individuals but not the opinion of our party.” Naveen Dissanayake declared, “The party will also perish because of those crazy talks.”
UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara announced on the 28th that Ranil Wickrathamasinghe’s tenure should be extended for another two years. It could be done after passing a parliamentary resolution, and a referendum could be held if necessary. UNP President Vajira Abeywardena, too, had publicly expressed a similar opinion on several occasions.
