President Ranil Wickremesinghe, as the Defense Minister, has authorized the detention and questioning of three student activists, including Wasantha Mudalage, the convener of the Inter-University Student Council, who were arrested by the police and are in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department for a period of 90 days.
The other two arrested here are Hassan Jeevantha and Galvewa Saridhamma Thero.
They were arrested during the protest held in Colombo on August 19 and were granted bail after being produced in court. But under the guise of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, with the permission of a Superintendent of Police, they were detained for three days and interrogated.
After the expiry of that three-day period, they were detained again for 90 days.
