Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has appointed Ranil Wickremesinghe as the new Prime Minister.
Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in after Sajith Premadasa declared his readiness to take over as Prime Minister, and the so-called independent group nominated three more.
Addressing the nation yesterday (11th), President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said, “I will take action this week to appoint a Prime Minister and a Cabinet that will win the confidence of the majority in Parliament and the confidence of the people of the country.”
However, the UNP led by Ranil Wickremesinghe received 249,435 votes in the last general election and 30,875 votes in the Colombo district where he contested. The party failed to win a single parliamentary seat in the country. However, Ranil was appointed Prime Minister despite holding only one seat from the National List.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa has acknowledged that Ranil Wickremesinghe is the only person in Parliament who has secured the people’s trust by getting 249,435 votes in the last election out of over 16 million voters in the last election in the country.
