The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) says that it will have to go on a power cut from today (24) due to the fuel crisis and added that a statement can be made in this regard after 11 am today (24th).
Accordingly, if the power cut is from today, it will have to be cut for an hour this afternoon and 2.5 hours a day from tomorrow (25th). According to those sources, from tomorrow the power cut will last for about an hour during the day and about an hour and a half at night.
The Sapugaskanda and Kelanitissa power plants are currently totally inactive due to a lack of fuel. The Sapugaskanda power plant alone supplied 108 MW to the power grid.
Meanwhile, one 300 MW generator at the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant has been idle for several months.
Hydropower generation is also limited to about 25%, especially in the face of rapidly declining water levels in reservoirs.
Acting General Manager of the Ceylon Electricity Board, Dr Susantha Perera says that the power cut schedule will be announced today.
At present, the maximum daily demand for electricity is 2,630 megawatts, but the daily power generation is 2,467 megawatts, the Acting General Manager revealed.
He said that the fuel stocks required for the 60 MW floating power plant would run out tomorrow, and if the required fuel is not supplied, another 183 megawatts will be lost to the power grid.
