Specialist Dr Sudath Samaraweera, who was the head of the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health, has been removed from the post.
The Epidemiology Unit has been severely criticized for presenting incomplete and erroneous reports on corona control in Sri Lanka at the Covid Suppression Special Committee attended by the President yesterday (18th). It is said that Dr Sudath Samaraweera has been removed from the post due to the allegations levelled against him.
He has been appointed as the Director of Dengue Prevention at the Ministry of Health. Specialist Dr Samitha Ginige has been appointed as the Acting Director of the Epidemiology Unit in his place.
The President addressing yesterday the Special Committee on the Suppression of Covid, had said that due to an error in the report given by the Epidemiology Unit on the 11th that stated 101 corona patients had died, the opportunity to remove travel restrictions on the 14th had to be altered. He had said that the actual death toll on that day had been 15. The President has further stated that due to inaccurate data, the intelligence services had to be deployed to find out the real situation.
