The “Janawarame Nithignayo” (Lawyers for Public Mandate) organization has stepped forward to dispel fear-mongering and false propaganda surrounding the government’s proposed constitutional amendment and judicial service revisions aimed at increasing the retirement age of all judges in the judicial system.
The Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposed amendments on July 27, with official details disclosed during the weekly Cabinet decision media briefing held on July 28.
Concurrently, a press conference was organized by ‘Janawarame Nithignayo’, where legal professionals clarified the necessity and impact of the proposed changes. Addressing the media, representatives stressed that opposition to raising the judges’ retirement age is entirely baseless and built on artificial political fear-mongering.
A large gathering of legal professionals attended the press conference, with key addresses delivered by attorneys-at-law Akalanka Ukwatta, Hemaka Senanayake, Manodya Galpaya, Anuradha Kiralawella, Nalin Amarajeewa, and Gamini Nallaperuma.
