The three suspects, including former Director of the CID Shani Abeysekera, were released by the Court of Appeal this afternoon (16th) but remanded until the 30th by Gampaha Chief Magistrate Manjula Karunaratne.
It is said that they have been asked to be remanded due to the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court not receiving the Court of Appeal bail conditions in writing. Former Director of the CID Shani Abeysekera and former Inspector of Police Sugath Mendis, who have been remanded for nearly 10 months, were released on conditional bail by the Court of Appeal today (16th) morning.
The two were arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division and produced before the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court on charges of fabricating evidence and illegally introducing firearms in a case against former DIG Vass Gunawardena who is currently on death row.
