Raising fuel prices widens split in government

Announcements being made by various individuals in the ‘flower bud’ party reveal that serious clashes have taken place in the government within 24 hours of the biggest increase in oil prices in the history of the country.
General Secretary of the ‘Flower bud’ party Sagara Kariyawasam had yesterday (12th) called on Minister Udaya Gammanpila to resign, taking responsibility for the increase in fuel prices. At the same time, the parties representing Minister Udaya Gammanpila have strongly emphasized that the Minister should not resign as it was not an arbitrary decision of the Minister but a decision taken by the Cost of Living Committee.
Following the increase in fuel prices there was a public outcry and social media as well as mainstream electronic media published news and reports against the government. In response to this, the General Secretary of the ‘Flower bud’ party had asked Minister Udaya Gammanpila to resign, but now Minister Gammanpila’s party has stated that the increse in fuel prices was decided by a joint committee representing the President and the Prime Minister.
As a result, it is becoming clear that conflicts are widening within the government based on the increase in fuel prices.
