Senior citizens distressed due to government’s sudden holiday decision

Many people had gathered in front of post offices today (12th) morning to receive the government’s monthly allowance of Rs. 2000 given to senior citizens. However, they were severely distressed as the government had suddenly declared today a government holiday and the post offices were closed.
Many senior citizens in the plantation areas, especially in Hatton and Bogawantalawa, had come to the post offices due to lack of communication that today had been declared a holiday but had to return home due to the closure of the post offices.

The allowance is paid at post offices from the 10th to the 15th of every month and many senior citizens had planned to get the allowance today and buy provisions to celebrate the New Year. As the government had suddenly declared today a holiday, the senior citizens had to go back home without being able to buy their provisions to celebrate the New Year.
