Lionel Messi broke Pele’s long-held record for the most goals scored for a single club when he scored his 644th goal for Barcelona on Tuesday..
A six-time Ballon d’Or winner, Messi has been setting records in the world of football, and he set another in the 65th minute against Valladolid, just days after equaling Pele’s record on the weekend.
Following the achievement, Messi, 33, said on Instagram: “When I started playing football, I never thought I would break a record. Especially the one I broke today, which was Pele’s.”
Pelé was the all-time leading goal scorer for Brazil with 77 goals in 92 games. At club level, he is Santos’ all-time top goalscorer with 643 goals from 656 games. A golden era for Santos, he led the club to the 1962 and 1963 Copa Libertadores, and to the 1962 and 1963 Intercontinental Cup.
