Christians in Sri Lanka join Christians worldwide to commemorate Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ, today (25th) with devotion. We are delighted to wish all Sri Lankan Christians who celebrate splendorous Christmas a Merry Christmas.
The day Jesus Christ was born 2020 years ago and generally recognized as the day that brings the message of peace is an important religious omen that fosters fellowship and consensus. In a world where religious philosophy is used by greedy and sinister capitalism and the rulers who uphold such social systems intensify division among people and get them to fight each other to gain power and more power. However, we believe that the responsibility of all is to find the true meaning of Christmas. We believe that the Christmas day is a good opportunity for all to resolve to defeat the real owners of the destructive politics and their vile intentions and spread Jesus Christ’s message of peace and brotherhood among the masses.
Jesus Christ made use of his vision to fight on behalf of the masses. He raised the ideological weapon against the administration that suppressed masses. His struggle for freedom and justice against vicious and corrupt rulers was not to the ruling class’s liking just like the ruling classes of today abhor any dissension. As a result, He had to confront various obstacles and make sacrifices in His endeavour to take His message to the masses, and in the end, He was nailed to the cross. His sacrifice for the liberation of people all over the world is what made His life sacred. The country and the world need today are fully-fledged independent people with such a fighting spirit who question the existing injustice and are prepared to make sacrifices.
Despite Christian devotees being unable to celebrate Christmas in the usual merry manner at a time when the covid pandemic engulfs the whole world, a serene environment has been opened up to boost up in their minds compassion Christmas brings and to consider all as equal. In a society where everyone is forced to compete and defeat others, Christ’s vision that teaches to see the neighbour with love, fraternity and compassion gives the society a special message. His teaching that “He, who has two coats, let him give to him who has none” emphasizes the aspiration for an egalitarian society.
We wish all Christians a Merry Christmas and call upon all Christian devotees in Sri Lanka to make this Christmas the day of resolve to create a society that would fulfil the virtuous aspirations that correspond with Christ’s teachings!
