Alleged Abduction of 11 Youths: Former Navy Commander Ravindra Wijegunaratne Released on Strict Bail Conditions

The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today (22) ordered the release of former Navy Commander Ravindra Wijegunaratne on strict bail conditions in connection with aiding and abetting a suspect involved in the abduction and enforced disappearance of 11 youths in Colombo and surrounding areas in 2008.

The order was issued when the case was taken up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena today.

The former Navy Commander appeared before the court in response to a notice issued previously.

After the charge sheet was presented, Wijegunaratne pleaded not guilty to the charges. Magistrate Pasan Amarasena subsequently ordered his release on two personal bails of Rs. 1 million each.

The Magistrate further directed that the case be called again on December 9 for trial.
