Sunil Gamage of the National People’s Power (NPP) has been appointed as the new Mayor of the Galle Municipal Council with 19 votes.
Before the mayoral vote, the council held a preliminary vote to decide whether the selection should be done through a secret ballot or a public vote. A majority supported the secret vote.
Following this decision, members of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) boycotted the session and left. As a result, the opposition candidate received no votes.
