At present, there is a shortage of certain types of medicines in several hospitals in the country, says the Director of the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital, Dr G. Wijesuriya.
Dr G. Wijesuriya says, “There is a shortage of certain types of medicines in many hospitals in the island. Because, on average, over 3,000 types of drugs are used. Also, when it comes to surgical consumables, nearly 6,000 are used. Some hospitals have shortages of these. When we take the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital, there is a shortage of about 30-40 medicines.
However, we will continue to provide patient care services. We have not stopped treating any child. At present the Ministry of Health is taking steps to import drugs with Indian financial assistance. The drugs will be available in another two to three months. Until then there are problems like this.”
He states that no hospital in the island has had its intensive care units closed.
“Intensive care units have not been closed in any hospital in the island. Also, no patient has died from a shortage of drugs, surgeries, or anything else. However, essential medicines are provided by the Ministry of Health and donors for emergency treatment to maintain essential services. We would appreciate all the support given to us by donors. Everyone is working hard to keep this health service going without a hitch.”
