Gotabaya lifts foreign loan trophy

Despite President Gotabaya Rajapaksa stating he has not taken loans under his control, it is revealed that he has obtained US $ 2,418 million in foreign loans last year alone.
The data relevant to this appears in the latest statement issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. US $ 1,882 million has been borrowed in 2020, and in 2021, the amount borrowed has been US $ 2,418 million.
Accordingly, the Gotabaya administration has borrowed US $ 4,300 million overseas in the past two years. The loan is a long-term loan and a large number of short-term loans were obtained from abroad. It is clear from this that a huge amount of foreign loans have been obtained on a long term basis against the backdrop of having obtained over 2 trillion rupees in loans domestically last year.
