Director-General of the Department of Zoology Sharmila Rajapaksa has resigned from her post.
She states that she will keep away from her duties until a formal investigation is carried out into the people involved in the sabotage and fraud and the dangerous situation is removed.
She said that she had informed the Secretary to the President and the Secretary to the Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Conservation in writing.
In the letter, she has requested for an inquiry to be held within 14 days, and an environment created for her to perform her duties.
She has stated in the letter that she would resign from her post if those conditions were not fulfilled.
She concludes her letter by referring to the arbitrary and destructive trade union action of a group of workers at the Dehiwala Zoo. She states she had written the letter focusing on the safety of other employees and the impact it had on the zoo’s animals.
