500M sovereign bond settled – Cabraal Paid to Rajapaksas – Rohana Lakshman

The Governor of the Central Bank, Ajith Nivard Cabraal, says that the sovereign bonds of US $ 500 million due today (18th) have been paid.
Many parties, including economists, question the government why it was in such a hurry to repay the loan, even though the central bank’s dollar reserves are meagre and it was possible to ask for more time to repay the loan.
Meanwhile, at a meeting held in Habaraduwa, Galle on the 16th, Senior Vice President of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa revealed that the Central Bank Governor’s haste to pay the bonds was to minimize the loss to the relatives of the Rajapaksa family.
Speaking further, Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa said, “The Governor of the Central Bank said that foreign debt bonds would be repaid. The amount is US $ 500 million. Who invested US $ 500 million in bonds? People do not know these things. People think the government is getting ready to pay off the debt. No, in fact, the bonds have been invested by relatives, friends and acquaintances of Rajapaksa’s and Ajith Nivard Cabraal’s. Those bonds are paid off quickly because they can pay more money to those friends. Every economist in the world says you don’t have to pay bonds right now but to ask for time to pay for bonds. Every country in the world asks for time to pay off debts in such a catastrophic situation. Politically, people are fooled and blindfolded, and they are told that the debts have been settled. No, it has not happened.”
