The lease of the 42-acre land where the Welikada Prison is located is Rs. 26600 million.
The cost of restoring the institutions located on the 42-acre land, including the Welikada Prison, is Rs. 31470 million.
By giving 42 acres of land in Welikada Prison on a long term lease basis for a mixed development project and relocating the existing institutions to different locations, the government will incur a loss of Rs.5170 million.
It is proposed to remove the Welikada Prison from the site and construct it on 280 acre land in the Millaniya area in Horana. It is proposed to construct a prison headquarters in Battaramulla and a complex for official quarters in Malabe.
It is also proposed to cover the cost of these three projects from the lease of the land where the Welikada Prison is located.
It is estimated that the land will be leased out on a long-term basis for a mixed development project at the cost of Rs.26300 million.
However, the relocation of the Welikada Prison at Millaniya in Horana, the construction of the headquarters in Battaramulla, the construction of the official quarters in Malabe and the acquisition of land are estimated to cost around Rs. 31470 million.
