The Pentagon yesterday (30th) announced that the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan has been completed, ending 20 years of U.S. military operations. Meanwhile, heavy gunfire was reported in the Afghan capital, Kabul, as pro-Taliban forces celebrate the US withdrawal.
The U.S. Central Command announced the completion of the troops’ withdrawal from Afghanistan and the end of the mission to evacuate American citizens, third-country nationals and Afghans during a news conference held by the Department of Defense today.
The withdrawal ended America’s longest war and closed a chapter in military history that would be remembered for colossal failures, unfulfilled promises and a frantic final exit that cost the lives of more than 180 Afghans and 13 US service members.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid speaking from the runway of Kabul airport said, “We want to have good relations with the US and the world. We welcome good diplomatic relations with them all,” he added, calling the American defeat a “lesson for other invaders”.
