Experts have focused on the country’s economy and the government’s failure to focus on the human lives lost in the covid epidemic.
Several economists and professionals have commented on this in various media, and Dr WA Wijewardena, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, has clarified these facts with economic data.
In his statement to the Lankadeepa newspaper on Sunday, August 15 (today), the lecturer has raised several important points. Some of them are quoted below.
“If we focus on saving human lives instead of the economy, it could reduce the total volume of goods and services produced in our economy by about 5%. However, it will not collapse the economy. The economy will not collapse at all.”
“Even if there is a downturn in the economy, at least the value of annual goods and services products will fall below 10% only. Nevertheless, the value of human life cannot be estimated.”
“It is unwise to prioritize the tourism industry in addressing the emerging foreign exchange deficit in the economy. Sri Lanka has an overestimation of the tourist industry.”
