45,000 children are covid patients in the country

Dr Nalin Kitulwatta said that covid was being infected rapidly among children and that the wards reserved for Kovid patients at Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital were overcrowded.

“We have taken steps to open two more wards elsewhere in Rajagiriya. This morning, about 150 children are being treated at Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital and the other two wards. Not only that. Over the past week, pediatric wards in all hospitals have been overcrowded with corona patients.”
Dr Nalin Kitulwatte is a consultant paediatric Intensivist at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, Colombo. He was the President of the (Paediatric Chapter) 2012/2013 Sri Lankan Society of Critical Care and Emergency Medicine and is a Member of the College of Paediatricians of Sri Lanka and the Perinatal Society of Sri Lanka.
He also pointed out that there is no need to hospitalize children with covid infection who show normal symptoms.
“Not all children need to be hospitalized and treated If possible, it is most important to take care of children with colds and flu at home without bringing them to the hospital. However, at what time should the child be taken to a hospital? If the child has a high fever and does not eat or drinks, if he vomits and suffers from diarrhoea or whenever he feels unwell, the child should be brought to a hospital can bring it.”
