The US, Japanese and Sri Lankan navies are currently conducting a joint military exercise inside and off the coast of Trincomalee. Sri Lanka Navy, United States 7th Fleet and Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) take part in the exercise. The US 7th Fleet augments the exercise with USS Charleston (LCS 18) – a Littoral Combat Ship, Boeing P-8 Poseidon – a Maritime Patrol Aircraft and an SH-60 helicopter while the Japanese contribution will be JDS Yūgiri – a destroyer and an MH – 60R helicopter. Sri Lanka Navy will be represented by the Offshore Patrol Vessels- SLNS Sayurala and Gajabahu while Sri Lanka Air Force is providing air assets that of Bell 212 and 412 helicopters as well as B 200 Beechcraft for the exercise.
This was officially inaugurated yesterday (24th) and exercises are scheduled to be held at the port today (25th) as well. The exercise will be held at the Trincomalee beach from tomorrow (26) to the 30th.
