Basil Rajapaksa, the Sri Lanka People’s Front founder, who returned to the island yesterday (24th) morning after spending more than a month in the United States, will be sworn in as a Member of Parliament on the 6th, according to political sources.
He is expected to enter Parliament as a National List Member of Parliament for the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
It is also reported that Prof. Ranjith Bandara, the National List MP of the SLPP, is to resign to allow Basil Rajapaksa to be sworn in as a Member of Parliament.
According to government sources, after being appointed as a Member of Parliament, Basil Rajapaksa will be sworn in, on the same afternoon, before President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as the Cabinet Minister of Finance and Economic Development.
He is also expected to reduce the increased petrol prices by Rs.5 to 7 and diesel by Rs. 3 to 5 after he is sworn in as a minister.
Basil Rajapaksa also served as the Cabinet Minister of Economic Development in the Rajapaksa Government from 2010-2015. He then fled to his home country, the United States, even before the 2015 election results of that election, which they lost, were announced.
