Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, Head, Department of Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, said that tests to find out whether mutations in the covid-19 virus are prevalent in the country will begin today (27).
Mutants of the covid-19 virus have been identified in several countries, including Africa, India, Britain, and the United States. The covid-19 virus is spreading rapidly, especially in India, and is thought to be a mutation.
Specialist Dr. Chandima Jeevandara says the tests will look into the presence of five different mutated corona species that are endemic to different parts of the world. He says Special PCR kit for this purpose was received in Sri Lanka yesterday (26th).
He said tests to identify all specific viruses in Sri Lanka would begin today and the results of all those tests would be released this week.
