Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam, who has been addressing press conferences on behalf of Namal Rajapaksa, has been caught making false and misleading statements regarding the MP’s past detention.
Kariyawasam recently claimed that Namal Rajapaksa was imprisoned without a charge sheet based on an incident that occurred 13 years ago. However, evidence shows that Rajapaksa was initially arrested over financial crimes during the Ranil-Maithripala administration, largely due to strong public pressure demanding accountability.
While in custody at the time, a series of articles titled “Kurahan Suwanda” (Scent of Kurakkan) was published in the Ada newspaper under his prison identification number, 5502.
Following his initial arrest, the charges against Namal Rajapaksa were shelved after he reportedly received political protection separately from both Ranil Wickremesinghe and Maithripala Sirisena.
