Former judge Saliya Perera stated that the proposed judicial reforms, including the 22nd Constitutional Amendment aimed at making the judicial system more people-friendly, will have no negative impact on the independence of the judiciary.
Speaking during a discussion on the “Gune Aiyage Kamare” YouTube channel hosted by Chaminda Gunawardena, the former judge highlighted several key points regarding the justice system. He emphasized that the proposed amendments would provide significant support to conduct the administration of justice systematically and efficiently.
Addressing training for the judiciary, Perera pointed out that after newly qualified judges are recruited to primary courts and receive theoretical instruction at training institutes, sitting-bench training under a senior judge is essential. He further emphasized that the duties of a judge are not limited to the bench, as extensive administrative processes operate behind the scenes.
