Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, elected to Parliament from Polonnaruwa district, has been unanimously appointed as the new Speaker.
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya proposed Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne MP for the post of new Speaker, which was seconded by the Leader of the House, Bimal Ratnayake.
Although it had been stated earlier that an MP from the opposition would also be proposed for the post of new Speaker, no other proposals were made at the time of proposing Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne as the new Speaker.
Accordingly, Polonnaruwa District Member of Parliament Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne was unanimously elected as the new Speaker.
