Christians in Sri Lanka with Christians worldwide commemorate Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ, today (25th) with devotion and joy. As the JVP, we extend our best wishes to the Christian devotees of Sri Lanka who are celebrating this wonderful Christmas. Commonly known as the day that brought the message of peace to the world, Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ, is an important religious event that cultivates brotherhood and fellowship in the human mind. However, 2021 years after the first Christmas, greedy, evil capitalism and the rulers who perpetuate that social system ignore the meaning of Christmas and divide the people for their profit and greed for power.
In a world like this, we consider it is everyone’s responsibility to discover the true meaning of Christmas. Its foremost step is to line up and defeat these evil politicians and their narrow political interests. People will have the opportunity to access the actual value of religious thought in a social system that has abolished the socio-economic environment, which compelled them to struggle for survival in daily life.
Jesus Christ used his ideology to fight on behalf of the people against the oppressive rulers. His struggle against the evil and corrupt rulers who were obstructing the freedom of the people provoked the ruling class then and today.
It is as a result of His ideological struggle that Jesus Christ eventually was crucified. His sacrifice for the liberation of the people of the world is considered sacred even today.
Many Christians do not have the opportunity to celebrate this Christmas as usual as the whole world suffers for the second year in a row from the covid epidemic. The people are economically affected due to the government’s failure and its wrong policies.
Nevertheless, it also provides a valuable opportunity to nurture the human qualities that Christmas embodies, to emphasize that the challenges facing society and the individual must be overcome collectively, and ignite the hope of an egalitarian society.
We urge all Sri Lankan Christians to embrace Christmas in that broad sense and be determined to create a society where the purpose of Christmas is real.
