Despite claims that she would appear before the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) today (24), Shiranthi Rajapaksa, who suddenly left for Singapore citing medical treatment, has failed to return to the island.
About two weeks ago, Namal Rajapaksa declared in Parliament that no member of their family would flee out of fear. However, Shiranthi Rajapaksa’s abrupt departure to Singapore and her subsequent absence have raised serious concerns among the public over whether she will return at all.
Meanwhile, social media users have been revisiting the events of May 9, 2022, when Mahinda Rajapaksa and the entire Rajapaksa family fled to hide at the Trincomalee Naval Base.
Although Namal Rajapaksa’s statement attempted to obscure the family’s history of fleeing during crises, Shiranthi Rajapaksa’s failure to return has brought the discussion surrounding the Rajapaksas’ history of escaping back into the spotlight.
Several other family members and close associates, including Basil Rajapaksa, Shameendra Rajapaksa, and Jaliya Wickramasuriya, are also currently abroad, having fled the country.
