Former Akkaraipattu Mayor Remanded Over Alleged Sexual Abuse of Public Official

The Akkaraipattu Magistrate’s Court ordered on the 19th that former Akkaraipattu Municipal Council Mayor Zaki Ataullah be further remanded until September 1st over charges of sexually abusing a public official under the promise of marriage and abusing his official power.

The victim, a female government officer working at the Akkaraipattu Municipal Council, recently went live on Facebook seeking justice, alleging that former Mayor Zaki Ataullah sexually abused her after promising to marry her.

Following her public statement, the victim lodged a complaint with the Ampara Child and Women Bureau. Zaki Ataullah was arrested when he arrived at the bureau to give a statement by a police team led by Chief Inspector Dayani Gamage, OIC of the Ampara Divisional Women’s Bureau, and subsequently produced before the court.

He had initially been remanded until the 19th and was remanded further until September 1st after being produced before the magistrate again on the 19th.
