Following the government’s proposal of a series of measures to expedite the clearance of 1.1 million cases backlogged in the country’s judicial system, those supporting the initiative have been labeled as individuals suffering from depression.
Those currently out on bail and individuals facing active charges are primarily lining up against the comprehensive process approved by the Cabinet to accelerate these trials. In addition, certain social activists are also backing this group, with Attorney Shiral Lakthilaka posting on his Facebook page that citizens who support the government’s proposal are suffering from depression.
Furthermore, numerous investigations are continuing to reveal how political patronage was granted to individuals involved in financial crimes and other offenses under previous governments. During Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe’s tenure as Minister of Justice, his son, Attorney Rakhitha Nirmala Rajapakshe, was arrested on court orders over allegations of extorting money from an underworld figure, and is currently released on bail.
