The Supreme Court today (24) ordered that the Fundamental Rights (FR) petition filed regarding the non-payment of electricity bills incurred at the Weeraketiya residence for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s son, Namal Rajapaksa’s wedding in 2019, be fixed for hearing on December 04.
The petition seeks a ruling declaring that the failure to settle the electricity bill violated the fundamental human rights of the public.
The application was taken up today before a Supreme Court bench comprising Justices A.H.M.D. Nawaz and Sampath Abeykoon.
Taking the submissions into consideration, the bench granted permission to the petitioner’s party to add the successor entity of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) as a respondent to the petition, given the ongoing restructuring process of the CEB.
The unpaid electricity bill from Namal Rajapaksa’s wedding—which remained unsettled even by 2023—was initially exposed by Nalin Hewage, then JVP Galle District Leader and current Deputy Minister. Following widespread public controversy and criticism, former State Minister Sanath Nishantha eventually stepped forward to settle the outstanding amount.
