Public Security Minister Vijitha Herath says that if a senior police officer gives an illegal order, the police personnel should have the strength to point out that it is unlawful. He said this while attending a function held at the Kalutara Police Training School.
Minister Herath said, “Attitudes about the police must be changed. You can be a pioneer in that change. You must have the courage to carry out your duties and responsibilities without political influence in protecting law and order.
You are bound at all times to follow the lawful orders of a superior. I repeat. You are only bound to follow the legal orders given by your superiors.
If any officer gives an illegal order, you should have the strength to point out that it is illegal. So don’t hesitate to do it.
Do your duty without fear and by your conscience. In the new political system, no member of parliament, minister, or president will pressure you to do illegal things.
Therefore, you are also responsible for performing your duties correctly in this situation.”
