Major Initiative Launched to Protect the Central Highlands’ “Heart”

Plans are currently being finalized to develop the Nuwara Eliya District into a sustainable tourism zone, with a special emphasis on protecting the critical catchment areas of the central highlands.

Comprehensive measures targeted at eco-tourism will be implemented, focusing on proper waste management in Nuwara Eliya city and the conservation of drinking water for sustainable development. A preliminary discussion regarding these initiatives was held on the 28th, led by Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakody, Deputy Minister of Education Madura Seneviratne, the Nuwara Eliya District Secretary, and other key officials alongside political representatives.

The primary objective of this program is the formal protection and conservation of nearly 1,500 hectares of vital watershed land by the Forest Department.
