The Supreme Court ordered yesterday (2) to hear the petition filed by Sunil Handunneththi, National Executive Member of the NPP, alleging that the government had lost Rs. 15900 million during the tax reduction imposed on imported sugar during the regime of former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
The petition was heard by the three-member Supreme Court bench of Yasanta Kodagoda, Janak De Silva, and Arjuna Obeysekera.
Sunil Handunneththi, NPP National Executive Member, filed the petition stating that in 2020, the government incurred a loss of Rs.15900 million by reducing the tax imposed on imported sugar from Rs.50 to 25 cents and requesting that a decision be given that the action violated fundamental human rights.
