Today (31), the Colombo Chief Magistrate Tilina Gamage ordered owners of 06 luxury jeeps, valued at Rs. 600 million, illegally imported and illegally registered by defrauding the Motor Transport Department, to be immediately handed over to the Bribery Commission.
It has also been revealed that the vehicles were smuggled in and illegally registered by deleting the data in the Motor Transport Department’s computer system. As a result of this illegal act, the country lost Rs. 300 million in customs duties.
The order was issued after considering a request made by the Bribery Commission by filing six complaints. The order states that the vehicles in question should be brought and handed to the Bribery Commission within seven days.
The vehicles that have been ordered to be handed over are three Montero Jeeps and Three Land Cruiser Jeeps.
