Iran’s Foreign Ministry said in an official announcement that Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdulrahman and several other government officials died in a helicopter crash.
Red Crescent rescue operations managed to find the wreckage of the missing helicopter in a mountainous area on the border between Azerbaijan and Iran, and they presume that the craft may have crashed due to thick fog.
At the time of the accident, the helicopter carrying Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi and Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Abdulraheen was flying from neighbouring Azerbaijan to Tabriz, a city northwest of Iran.
Authorities in Tabriz have confirmed that two other helicopters accompanied the one carrying the Iranian president and foreign minister and landed safely in thick fog.
The Iranian President and Foreign Minister had gone to Azerbaijan to inaugurate the two dams named Kis Kalasi and Kodafarin, which were built in the country with aid from Iran.
