Power cuts will be for 8 to 10 hours next year – Janaka Ratnayake

Janaka Ratnayake, Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission, confirmed the electrical engineers’ statement yesterday (20th), emphasizing that if coal cannot be imported as scheduled, there will be a long power cut between 08 and 10 hours a day in the year 2023.
He revealed that only five coal ships have arrived in the country since August.
He said that due to the shortage of coal, it was recommended to switch off one generator in the Norochchola power plant, as that step had to be taken to manage the situation.
He emphasized that the number of ships that can be brought to Sri Lanka from the 15th of April next year is very limited. There will need to be more for electricity generation in the coming year, and the country will have to go through periods of long power cuts again.
