Ranil Wickramasinghe issued an extraordinary gazette on the 23rd, designating high-security zones but withdrew it in the face of massive public opposition against the gazette.
He issued the zones stating the State Secrets Act of the 1950s, with the primary goal of suppressing protest march organized by the Socialist Youth League.
The lawyers pointed out that the gazette notification naming high-security zones is illegal and suppresses the fundamental rights guaranteed by the constitution.
Based on that, the JVP and several other groups submitted petitions to the Supreme Court against it.
Despite the gazette for high-security zones, the SYU held a highly successful demonstration and a rally though Ranil-Rajapaksa’s security forces brutally attacked the demonstration and arrested more than 83 protest leaders.
