Former state minister Ranjan Ramanayake, who is serving a prison sentence for insulting the court, apologized to the court yesterday (25th) by submitting an affidavit.
It is stated in the affidavit that he is seeking forgiveness from the court in relation to the cases related to contempt of court.
It has been mentioned in the affidavit that his statements are completely wrong, and he apologizes for causing disrespect to everyone in the legal field, including the Chief Justice.
The former state minister stated in the court’s affidavit that his statements are false and that he will retract those statements and will not make such statements in the future.
On 12 January 2021, the Supreme Court sentenced him to four years imprisonment with hard labour after filing the first case against him for his statement made outside the Temple Trees on 21 August 2017.
The second case was filed regarding the statement made in the court that the first statement would not be withdrawn.
However, earlier, he continued to state that the statement he made was completely true and that he would not retract the statement or plead guilty even if he went to jail.
