Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo, says that the Government and the police appear to be playing a drama regarding the investigation into the bomb incident at All Saints Church in Borella.
The Cardinal said he would fight until the truth of the case was revealed, adding that he was advocating for justice for the suspects, including Muni, who was arrested by the police. He added that discussions were underway with lawyers.
The Cardinal was speaking at a conference held through Zoom technology with Sri Lankans abroad on the Easter attack and the church grenade incident.
He emphasized that the Government and the police should not be allowed to slip away.
“We will fight against this Government until the truth of this incident is fully revealed.
We can clearly see the drama being played by this Government and the police. That’s why I also told our fathers to go through the CCTV scenes of that morning. Because then we can find out if anyone else brought this bomb. So we were able to find it.
The police attempt to put the blame on ‘Muni’ and wash their hands off the incident. That is what the Minister of Police said in a statement. We, with our conscience, cannot allow such things to happen to anyone. Therefore, we will not allow the Government or the police to slip away in this matter. So, we will fix this matter in court. We have the court. We are confident about the court.
We are working to correct the mistake made to that man because the Minister in charge of the police jumped straight and said that it was this man’s work. Not only this but the bomb that was kept somewhere in the hospital was also put to his account. So we do not accept the justice that the police are trying to do by threatening people and taking statements. We reject that. That is why we have decided to stand up for the injustice done to this man and the other three.”
The Cardinal also said that three of his associates who seek justice to the Easter victims would be joining the United Nations soon and that the organization would have the opportunity to deal directly with the victims from the end of this month. He added that it would be a great help in the search for justice for the victims.
