A protest was held at the Lipton Roundabout in Colombo yesterday (5th), demanding the immediate withdrawal of the Kotelawala National Defense University Bill.
The protest was organized by the People’s Movement Against the Militarization of Education and was attended by the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations, trade unions, mass organizations, civil society organizations, student organizations, religious organizations, artists and several opposition political parties.
The participants called on the government to immediately withdraw the Kotelawala Bill and not mix civil and military education. They emphasized that education was not a matter of command but a matter of questioning and dialogue and that it was everyone’s responsibility to defeat the move to militarize education.
