The General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union Mahinda Jayasinghe stated that the discussions held with the Prime Minister today (27th ) regarding the demands of teachers and principals ended without a solution and that the trade union action taken by the Teachers’ and Principals’ Trade Unions will be continued.
The trade union action is based on a number of demands, including the withdrawal of the Kotelawala University Act, the elimination of 24 years of unresolved salary anomalies of teachers and principals, and the provision of online facilities for all children.
Mr Mahinda Jayasinghe said that today’s discussion lasted for nearly two hours and that the government party was reluctant to hand over to the unions the cabinet paper submitted to the cabinet to resolve the teachers’ and Principals’ issues.
He also called on parents and students to urge the government to address these issues and expedite the education of children.
