Italy won the European Cup for the second time in history in the final of the Euro Cup 2020 at the Wembley Stadium in London, England today (12th) early morning. England were beaten 3-2 on penalties.
Luke Shaw scored the first goal for England in 1 minute 57 seconds to the delight of the England spectators. It was the shortest goal scored in a Euro Cup final in history, previously set in 1964 by Chus Perreda of Spain.
In addition, Luke Shaw’s goal is the fifth-fastest goal in tournament history and the third-fastest goal of the tournament this year. At the end of the first half, England took a 1-0 lead and in the 67th minute of the second half, Italy’s Leonardo Bonussi scored making it a tough challenge for England.
At the end of the match, both teams were tied 1-1 and neither team was able to score in extra time. Because of this, the winner had to be decided by a penalty kick. For Italy, Dominico Berardi, Leonardo Bonucci and Federico Bernardesi scored from the penalty spot, while only Harry Kane and Harry Maguire scored for England.
Italy won the Euro Cup for the second time, having previously won the title in 1968. England qualified for the final for the first time and had to be satisfied of being the runners-up in front of over 50,000 English spectators. Italy failed to even qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, but last night, less than three years later, they were able to show the world what their place was on the football field.
