World’s First Snake Summit Begins in Kandy

Around 500 delegates, including 315 foreign experts from 43 countries, gather in Kandy for a historic conference on snake research and conservation.

The world’s first-ever conference on snakes has commenced in Kandy, bringing together snake experts, herpetologists, and environmentalists from around the globe.

The three-day event, held under the patronage of Minister of Environment Dr. Dhammika Patabendi, is scheduled to conclude the day after tomorrow (October 05).

The summit has drawn around 500 representatives from 43 countries, including 315 international scholars and researchers.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Nimal D. Ratnayake, General Secretary of the World Snake Federation, revealed that while there are approximately 12,500 snake varieties across the globe, only around 4,000 are categorized as distinctive or notable species.

The summit will cover a wide range of topics, including global research, new scientific discoveries, and discussions on both venomous and non-venomous snake species.
